Beer may help decrease the risk of cancer. Chronic GERD, known as heart burn, causes erosion of the lining of the esophagus. These changes can eventually become cancerous. A recent study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found that moderate beer consumption was associated with a 37%-61% decreased risk of this precancerous lesion. In Australia, where the research was performed, moderate beer intake equates to 2-4 glasses a day! The positive effect of beer on the esophagus is most likely from hops’ polyphenols.
Pure alcohol does not have this same protective effect. Additionally, moderate to excessive alcohol consumption has been linked to increased risk of pharyngeal, liver, colon, rectal and breast cancer. So, as always, practice everything in moderation.
In America mass produced beer has the medicinal chemicals removed during purification. Your best source of hoppy beer is a local microbrewery. Luckily in Columbus we are home to the Cannon Brew Pub.com So go get a glass of their IPA and tell them your doctor sent you. (Don’t drink and drive.)
