Kangaroo Care may have long term benefits for premature infants. Premature infants are at higher risk for breathing
issues, digestion issues and developmental issues. Providing skin to skin contact for as little as one hour per day has been shown to have developmental benefits that are still obvious when the children are 10 years of age. These benefits include better hormonal responses to stress, more mature functioning of their nervous systems and better thinking skills. “Adding maternal-infant contact in the neonatal period has a favorable impact on stress physiology and behavioral control across long developmental epochs in humans,” according to Ruth Feldman, author of the study published in the journal Biological Psychiatry. Holding premature infants is a simple, cost effective and loving way to support the short and long term health of premature infants.
