Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health published an article in the January 20, 2014 edition of JAMA Neurology which associated vitamin D levels with Multiple Sclerosis outcomes. Study participants with higher levels of vitamin D had a 57% decreased risk of developing new brain lesions in addition to a 57% lower risk of relapse. Also, patients with higher levels of vitamin D showed a 25% lower yearly increase in T2 lesions. The study did not determine therapeutic doses but looked at sustained serum levels of vitamin D. Based upon previous research, we recommend maintaining levels above 50nmol/L for all of our patients and can assist you in determining your current vitamin D status.
